Recycling and the Civil War

Recycling isn’t only about preserving the environment; ithas been around since the early days of our nation’s history. An excellent example ofthat is how materials were recycled and reused during the Civil War to providemuch-needed supplies both on and off the battlefield.

For the past year, the City of Manassas Citizen’s AdvisoryCommittee on Solid Waste has been researching what and how people recycledduring the Civil War.  This intrepid group of volunteers have been visiting the Libraryof Congress and conversing with local and regional historians uncovering awealth of information on how materials such as paper, metal and textiles wererecycled and reused on the battlefield and at home.

An exhibition of the information that they have gathered will be displayed in City Hall for the month of November to celebrate America Recycles Day.
